I don't have any problem with people keeping less than 4 players, that is certainly within the rules. To be honest, I was just unaware of this whole dropping keepers thing until people started doing it. I understand why everyone is doing it, just not sure I agree that it should be allowed in coming years.
The ability to see who has been kept and who is available put teams who dropped keepers in much better shape than other teams, because they always had the option to keep some of their guys, but also had the option to drop some if they saw better players available.
I just think that once you announce who you have kept, you can't go back on that without some sort of penalty or loss of pick. I don't really understand what's stopping everyone from announcing 4 keepers, then once they see who everyone else has kept, decide whether or not to drop keepers from their roster if the FAs are better. This puts teams with actual intentions of keeping 4 players at a huge disadvantage, as they are essentially announcing their keepers before other teams are. It also hurt the teams who announced less than 4 keepers to begin with.

I like the option to keep 4 players or take a chance with the FA pool. In 2012 I think we should set a commitment date for keepers and no keeper can be dropped after that date. However a team should be able to trade a keeper to a team that has less than 4 for a draft pick. That being said this is 2011 - Everyone knows the rules (good or bad) and can do exactly what everyone else is if they choose to.

I don't see what the big deal is. I kept two knowing that other teams had to drop some good players. However, if teams want to add to the FA on a gamble, that actually fills up the FA and for teams with multiple picks, that could mean getting a couple of stud players before anyone else gets a chance to draft while the team that dropped a player may only get one player. I think the current setup is just fine. It makes strategy much more important.
The only problem I have is that the draft is so early we don't get a chance to see how players look over spring training. I would prefer to have the draft a week or two before start of the actual season so that we have a better idea on how the players are developing especially with 20 teams.

Matt, I agree with you, and will add some of my pennies for thoughts.
It is true, these managers are playing within their right and their option to manage their team as they see fit. One can decide to drop whomever they wish in order to have a chance at a better player later on (or earlier on in the draft). Managers can also ultimately keep their players as keepers if they wish (4 of them). The strategy evolves as a manager sees fit.
HAVING SAID THAT...I will whole heartedly agree with Hawaii and Matt's sentiments. A keeper league should be just that....A KEEPER LEAGUE. A league in which ALL managers should keep an iron clad number of players. To have several teams swap out their keepers (which they named officially) into a FA pool to drool over a draft pick defeats the purpose of a keeper league, if we only have a handful of managers keeping all four players. The damage has been done this year, but going into next year, this should not be allowed. If you have a bad draft, make bad trades, or just have a bunch of injured keepers, you designed the team, and you should answer for it. Nobody should play their way so poorly as to covet a second chance to draft better keepers just because they dont like all 3 or 4 options that they had left-over. I feel managers should do it the old fashioned way: by drafting and trading their way out of their dilemma. If we have 7 teams keeping all their players, 6 teams keeping 3 players and the rest keeping 2 or 0, then we dont technically have a keeper league, we have a redemption league. One in which managers who dont like what they see have the chance to stretch the rules and obtain better players from a pool in the hopes of turning around in 1 year and having a better starting squad than you did in formulating your team over 3 years. Can the strategy backfire? Sure. However, when I saw some of the keepers that managers were holding, I gotta be honest, I LOVED my chances. Now, I am not even sure if I like my chances due to the fact that they were strapped to some top 125 players, and nobody in the top 40. They can now fish for better results early and have a more competitive squad. As Hawaii said, it simply isn't fair to the teams that have charted a course over 3 years. Next year, I say this nonsense has to stop, otherwise there is no point to calling it a keeper league. Why did we HAVE TO name keepers if we could just drop them whenever the f*#@ we pleased? Why was there a deadline for keeper naming or trading if we could change that all in a second?
I also feel bad for the teams that traded picks away only to drop the guys they ended up trading for. They too were deceived in this process. I just honestly and openly will say that it wasn't thought out too well to allow teams with crap keepers to have a second lease on life. You made your bed, and so, you shall lay in it, thus all men are created equal on a level playing field of trade and draft skills.
I am begging for this to stop for good next year, and give everyone this final year to pick their top 4-5 guys and thats it. I dont care if your team has Matt Gamel, Matt Garza, Kung Fu Panda, Michael Young and Soria....if thats the best you got, live with it and study for a good draft. Likewise, the teams with Pujols, Hanley, Votto, King Felix and Lincecum should also not be punished for being that damn good by letting a team with Doc, Cargo, Tulo and Hamilton vie for a better 5th keeper than you. All I am voicing on this forum is that the system needs to change, because as we all know, in life and sports, things are not always fair. Its the reason most of the same teams are always in the playoffs (in real sports), and its the reason usually the same managers are vying for a title (in fantasy). Keep things going for this year, and please stop the dropping next year. Lay in your own bed, however messy it may be.

I dont know if you would be able to just assign that a team can only keep a player for a fixed amount of time in the middle of a dynasty. Jason Heyward is an example of a player that is kept at a higher premium in this league than other keeper leagues becasue you can keep him until the end of his career. Saying that you can only keep him for 5 years or 3 years puts the heyward owners at a huge disadvantage. I dont own any players that would fit that catagory, but I think certain things need to remain consistent year to year

If I am correct I think we were going to 5 keepers next season. I think that maybe a mistake. Its pretty clear that in a 20 team league that 4 keepers are to many. I think we should discuss the possibility of cutting the number of keepers back for next year to 2 or 3. I know some won't like that either. After reading some of the comments I agree with some of the others and think if you declare your keepers, they should be what you go into the season with. I also agree that a team should have to keep a minimun number of players. If we don't then lets not have any keepers and draft fresh every year. As for strategy, I don't see how you can come up with any strategy at all, when you have no idea who is going to dump a keeper for an earlier pick.

Cant speak for the league that you are in, but our's voted to bump to 5. some of us made trades for extra picks in the 1st round after keepers to get some additional options. I dont think changes like that can just be made. at least not until after the following season

like I said in the post I know some wouldn't like it. Everyone isn't going to be happy with any solution. I really don't care either way. I've got four solid keepers for this year and will have 5 for next year. Just throwing out some ideas

understandable, but not everyone needs to be happy with status quo because it was subject to a vote. to make a change it would require another vote with an overwhelming majority

What's the difference between dropping a keeper for a draft pick and dropping a player for a free agent pick up?

I want to say that I agree with Will and Bradley, a keeper league should keep it's focus on teams having keepers. So if you have the option of dropping players for draft picks then shouldn't you have the option of keeping your entire team ? As a manager you need to continue to build your team every year and put yourself in a position to compete. Managers should be accountable for their team during the off season and continue to improve their roster. I think it would be better if everyone had the same number of keepers. I think this is something we need to look into this next season.

What's the difference between dropping a keeper for a draft pick and dropping a player for a free agent pick up? Well for me the difference is the rosters have been selected and everyone is starting out with 21 players. If you want to improve your team by picking up a free agent and dropping a current player then so be it. right now rosters are not set and many managers had to give up players that they probable would have kept if it wasn't for the minimum 4 keepers. I know I would have done things differently if I understood the rulers better. I never would have traded a one of my picks and probably would have went with 2 keepers and go from there. Managers feel locked in to their current players and the feel that others have more flexibility without Keepers.

I dropped a player earlier because I decided he wasn't worth keeping. I didn't even look at the players being dropped because I have no control if they are there. I also dropped him because i didn't think you had to keep 4 keepers. I have no problem keeping keepers as long as thats the rule.

I agree w/ Cubsare1. Too many keepers in this 20 team league. Although my league voted to increase keepers to 5 next season, I believe it was a decision that was not well thought out. Keeping 5 players in a 20 team league is ridiculous. 2 to 3 players should be enough. It is a bad decision that will be reversed within the next two years. Take that one to the bank.
